Japanese natural stone #6 - Shobudani suita (I)

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

This Shobudani Suita is actually my friend Ken's stone which I only spent 2 weeks with, it's huge (2kg I think), a full size 30 with 205mm plus length and 75mm width and at least 50mm thick.

The stone is relatively easy to use - self slurry with no diamond plate, literally just splash water and ready to go, the stone doesn't absorb large amount of water, very easy to control, however still works fine if you manage to flood the surface with water.

Fineness wise, it's an excellent pre finisher, a great bridge between 4K synthetic to a finer stone say Nakayama, acts similar to the Uchigumori/Nakayama Suita I have.

Unfortunately I didn't get to use the stone that much because I was more interested to try the Maruka from him... lol

Very buttery sharpening feel, quite similar to my Uchigumori and another Suita from Nakayama - https://www.kirusharpening.com/post/japanese-natural-stone-5-nakayama-suita-i

Maybe slightly chalkier than the Nakayama but not noticeably coarser or anything.

  • Characteristic of the stone (on a scale of 5)

Hardness - low 4

Fineness - high 3 to low 4

Speed - 4-4.5
