Japanese natural stone #2 - Okudo Shiro Renge Suita(I)

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

I've only owned two stones from this mine, been wanting to get another one or two but no luck yet(the good ones are too pricy and other ones are a bit sketchy looking...).

Okudo is a Kyoto mine that's located on the East side of Kyoto, and Okudo Suita is widely considered as the king of Suita because of the speed and quality they can offer.

The two I've owned can be used as finisher but if you're more experienced(or have more stones) you probably will consider them as pre-finisher.

This one I have is from the Suita level, Shiro means white, and Renge refers to the little dots on the stones.

Suita is a huge topic, if you're interested in them, look into JNS's website or talk to someone more knowledgeable than I am!

To be honest I feel like I am going to say this for all my stones(maybe except some of the synthetics)… I enjoy all of them lol so obviously I enjoy this one as well, they are all very different.

This particular suita has a very smooth feedback, almost buttery, no inclusions, and doesn't leave coarse scratches on your blade.

With nagura, it gives even smoother feedback, almost feels like your blade isn't touching the stone per say.

In terms of edge sharpening, this stone gives a quite refine edge but yet still toothy, personally I do prefer a more toothy edge (i.e from Aizu).

  • Characteristic of the stone (on a scale of 5)

Hardness - between 4-4.5

Fineness - 4, 4.5 with nagura

Speed - 4.5
